I don't normally read medical suspense. I'm squeamish so I sure don't like medical details. Yet, I couldn't resist this one. I knew before I ordered this book that author Brandilyn Collins had suffered from Lyme Disease; I was very curious to see how she turned personal experience into a novel--especially a suspense.  I very seldom read for pleasure anymore. It takes a really good book to zap me from learning mode to being completely lost in the excellence of story. I didn't expect this book to be any different from the majority of books I read. I planned to use Over The Edge as a learning tool, paying attention to how it was constructed. The moment it arrived at the post office, I tore into it. I sat in the parking lot and devoured the prologue and the entire first chapter. Talk about yanked into the story! I put washing, drying, cooking on hold; just one more chapter, just one more. I read off and on until one o'clock a.m. then awoke at four a.m. and started reading again. Readers will experience a myriad of emotions while reading this book. Anger, confusion, frustration are only a few. Collins has done an excellent job of informing the reading world about Lyme Disease. She's put them in the mind and body of someone who has it. Collins has also shown us a very real problem in the medical profession: competition between doctors. Competition between hospitals. It truly exists. She could get many more suspense novels from those topics!

Over The Edge is a novel that will stay with me for quite awhile. And I have no hesitation in recommending it to you. Meet the author and watch her trailer below to see just how she came up with her idea.

CFBA Present Daisy Chain by Mary DeMuth

Today, I'm thankful for so much: good friends and faithful prayer warriors. Thankful that God has touched Eric Dilmore and he's on the mend.

I'm thankful too that God gave me just the right title for my blog: Praise, Prayers and Observations. That title covers everything I have in my heart.

I'm also praising God for good writers of Christian Fiction. Last night I started reading Daisy Chain--I'm so behind on my reading!--and I was hooked from the get-go. Mary DeMuth has a wonderful writing style. A distinct voice. Every verb sings. Every sentence paints a picture.

Just try to read Tender Grace without crying. The first sentence put a lump in my throat:

CFBA Presents Stand-In Groom by Kaye Dacus

I'm probably the world's worst when it comes to hanging with a book if it doesn't grab me immediately. My daughter gets disgusted with me. She reads about 40 books a year, HUGE, THICK classics and best-sellers, while I read about 140 first pages a year. I'm searching for . . . for what? That perfect first page? No, I'm trying to find a book that will make me forget I'm reading fiction. A book that will suck me right into the story as if I'm there, living, breathing, laughing, hurting with the characters. I expect those characters to mean something to me, become my friends. Am I asking too much? I don't think so.

I'm happy to introduce Stand-In Groom by Kaye Dacus. I started reading the first page and before I knew it, I was on the second chapter, and then the third and then . . . What really thrilled me about this book is that I don't only like the heroine Anne Hawthorne, I admire her. She's real. She's not a cliche. She's a lady I'd like to know in real life. In fact, she the kind of lady I might like to be. I'm not finished with Stand-In Groom but I can assure you I'm enjoying every well-constructed sentence. If this debut novel is a hint of things to come from new author Kaye Dacus, then we readers are in for a real treat. She's a perfect example of a writer who has learned the craft of writing; she's an expert at characterization. For certain, she's an author to watch.

CFBA presents: John 3:16 by Nancy Moser

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing John 3:16 Tyndale House Publishers (September 9, 2008) by Nancy Moser.

I was introduced to Nancy Moser when my daughter read Stranger Beside Me. Daughter kept exclaiming how good the book was but I don't read airplane books so it was easy to resist. When John 3:16 came my way, I grabbed it. I found the title and cover alone intriguing. Scanning the first page, John 3:16 immediately yanked me into the story and wouldn't let go. I had other things on my plate--all I wanted to do was glance, but I was hooked. If you like to get involved with your characters, try this one. Moser does a fantastic job of putting us in the hearts and minds of Roman, Lianne, Velvet and all the others. I sympathize with Roman because his love for his son is so great it's sinful. Something to think about, heh? Moser is an expert at building tension. I care about these characters. I hurt for them. And even though I'm still reading, I already know Moser's characters are going to stay with me for a long, long time.

And what better message is there than John 3:16?

After Tamara Leigh earned a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology, she and her husband decided to start a family, with plans for Tamara to continue in her career once she became a mother.

Glancing at the first page, I'm thrilled by the opening line:

Now it's my turn to read The Hunted, a book I've been looking forward to for a long time. As soon as it came in the mail, my daughter confiscated it and I never saw it again. Here's what she had to say to my questions:

Me: Why did you tear open my package and confiscate The Hunted before I could get my hands on it.

Daughter: I needed something good to read and I needed it immediately.

Me: What grabbed you about this particular book?

Daughter: All the characters--even the mean ones--were so intriguing.

Me: Even from the first page? I've never seen a book grab hold of you like The Hunted did.

Daughter: I know. Even from the beginning it was very suspenseful --grabbed me and kept me. His characters knew a secret and I wanted to know it too. :)
Mike Dellosso never gave me enough info to satisfy me so I had to keep reading. He's really good at teasing us into turning pages.

Me: Did anything in particular impress you about this new author?

Daughter: Yeah, he sure knows how to write from the woman's perspective. Maggie was very real. I liked her a lot.

Me: Okay, where's The Hunted? It's my turn to be intrigued by new author Mike Dellosso.

Daughter: It's in my book case because it's a keeper. So when's his next book coming out? I need something really good to read.

I graduated from Ohio State University (Go Buckeyes!) with a degree in Journalism. As a member of Phi Mu sorority, I partied my way though the last few years of college.

But, the truth is, and always will be, I belong to Jesus. At the age of six, I knelt at the altar of a Tulsa Methodist church and gave my life to the One who loves me.

After graduation, hired on at Harris Publishing as a software trainer, determined to see the world. And I did it without a laptop, a cell phone, an IPod or portable DVD player. Those were hard times.

But, I traveled to Ireland, Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, Australia, Canada and the U.S. from California to Maine. But, life on the road is difficult. Working twelve to fourteen hour days, one doesn't get to see many of the sites. In Ireland, our company's distributor drove me around at night so I could see something of Dublin.

I met Tony, my husband, in '87, at church, of all places. We got married in '92. Tony has been a pastor for twenty years. I've worked with him in eighteen of those twenty. Our heart is to see teens and adults passionate, radical and whole hearted for Jesus.

Tony and I don't have any children of our own, lots of kids-in-the-Lord and we love them all. However, we do have a very spoiled dog, and an even more spoiled cat.

I've always wanted to be a writer. My dad used to tell me, "You're a writer." I have letters he wrote me post college, exhorting me to write. In this, I believe he had the heart of God.

In '93, I started an epic WW2 novel with two plots. It was well rejected. After that ordeal, I took a break and put efforts into my job as a software project manager. But, I missed writing and in late ' 99, I took up the craft again.

With a little help from my friends, my first book was published in ' 04, Lambert's Pride, a romance novel. I love writing chick lit and romance. I love writing. What an honor.
