Elmore Leonard said something years ago that stuck with me: When something sounds like writing, I rewrite it.
I think that's great advice for all of us--no matter what we write.

Awhile back, I entered a mystery writing contest and asked for a critique. One of my judges wrote the following, and it's the best compliment I've ever received on my writing.
Voice/Writing style:
Rest in Peace, Mr. Leonard.
We'll miss you.
And you won't be forgotten.

Hi Jessica! I just left a really nice comment, but it got lost! Dang Google and Blogger! I know what I did wrong, too, which aggravates me more :o
Anyway, I thanked you for posting this and said my favorite quote of Mr. Leonard's is this: "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip." Love that! Thank goodness we have his wonderful writings (and movies, etc.) to remember him and never really lose him.
What a wonderful compliment from Judge #1. I love Elmore Leonard's style and his advice/quotes. I completely agree about the writing not calling attention to itself. It should disappear into the background and let the story and characters have center stage.
